MILTON-FREEWATER - Mac-Hi came away victorious in a non-league softball game with DeSales here Tuesday.
The Pioneers beat the Irish, 7-2, behind solid pitching by Kaitlin Erm, DeSales coach Russell Vera said.
"She had nine strikeouts against us and pitched a great game," Vera said. "She kept our hitters off balance the whole game."
DeSales didn't have a hit until the seventh inning, when they had two. This was their first game after spring break, and the lack in practice showed, Vera said.
"We were just off spring break and there were a lot of girls who weren't at practice last week," he said. "All the credit goes to Mac-Hi. They played well and we came up flat."
Mac-Hi's scoring started in the third inning when Andrea Roeder walked to first and stole second. Kayla Wright had a hit, then stole second to put runners on second and third, when Lauren Sams hit a sacrifice fly to score Roeder.
Belen Betancourt then singled, bringing Wright home from third.
The Pioneers' scores in the fourth came off a hit by Sams, running in Roeder, and an error on a hit by Betancourt to plate Wright.
Sams and Betancourt led Mac-Hi with two RBIs each.
"Our bats were a little slow at first, but we made some adjustments in the third and kept putting pressure on the DeSales defense," Mac-Hi coach Nicole Christian said.
Leading Pioneer hitter and pitcher Shawney Garcia was out sick, but backup pitcher Erm had a solid seven-inning game, for nine strikeouts and no walks, with six of the strikeouts coming in the first four innings, Christian said.
"We had good defense, with a double play and making the routine outs," Christian said. "This was a great win for us, with our league opener on Friday."
The non-league loss leaves DeSales undefeated in league play at 4-0, and 0-1 in non-league action. The Irish host Waitsburg-Prescott in a doubleheader Saturday.
The Pioneers open league play Friday, hosting a doubleheader against Baker at 2 p.m. They're 8-2 in non-league play.
