HEPPNER - Weston-McEwen combined balanced scoring with outstanding pitching and defense to win its Blue Mountain Conference opener against Heppner here, 6-0, Tuesday.
The TigerScots scored two runs in each of the third, fifth and seventh innings, while Haley Freske struck out 11 Mustangs, while walking three and allowing three hits in the circle.
Catcher Morgan Entze smacked a two-run home run in the third inning, and was 2-for-3 at the plate.
"Going on the road for our first league game, and getting a win, was a good start for us," W-M coach Jeff Griggs said. "I thought Haley pitched well, and Morgan had a strong outing as well. She had the home run and two RBIs, and threw someone out at second."
TigerScots right fielder McKenzie Fuhrman had a notable play, making a diving catch to end the Heppner sixth inning with a runner on second.
"She caught what looked like a single, which would have scored the runner," Griggs said. "We've been stressing we want our defense to make outs, so it's not just Haley striking (batters) out."
He also said second baseman Claire Ely moved up in the order to hit in the third spot for W-M Tuesday.
"She played really solid," Griggs said. "She had an RBI in the fifth, and had two good contacts. She's been playing well for us."
W-M, at 1-0 in league and 5-4 overall, travels to Irrigon for an 11 a.m. twin bill Saturday.
