KENNEWICK - Wa-Hi won two softball games against Southridge here Thursday.
The top-ranked Blue Devils - second in the state as of Monday's Seattle Times poll - improved to 7-0 on the season.
The Blue Devils won the first game, 3-2, and improved in the second with an 11-1 win over the Suns.
Wa-Hi figured out the Suns pitcher, who threw both games.
"We got her timed in the second game," said Wa-Hi coach Jerry Humphreys. "The kids were just crushing the ball."
The first game was a defensive battle, Humphreys said. Wa-Hi caught 17 infield outs - seven by shortstop Alicia Baker - and Hope Klicker had 10 putouts at first base.
"It was a definite game of big plays," Humphreys said.
Southridge had a chance to win the first game in the final inning, when the Suns had a runner on first base with no outs. The Blue Devils caught a popped-up bunt with a diving catch by Klicker for an out, and the next Southridge player struck out. The runner was caught at first to end the game.
"It was awesome," Humphreys said.
The second game wasn't nearly as close. Klicker came in to pitch and threw seven strikeouts, with no walks and three hits.
"She did a great job," Humphreys said.
And Wa-Hi posted three home runs in the nightcap.
Alyson Ambler, pitching in the first game, hit two homers, scored another run and had five RBIs. Tarynn Fortune hit one home run and had an RBI, going 2-for-2 in the game.
"They were hitting the ball hard," Humphreys said. "They did a great job all day."
The twin bill was the Blue Devil's first after spring break.
"It was nice to get back to the field after a long break," Humphreys said. "The kids did a great job."
