WALLA WALLA - DeSales had the answers here Saturday in a Southeast 2B softball league doubleheader.
The Irish jumped on Waitsburg-Prescott with a five-run first to open the double dip. W-P couldn't dig out from the early hole as the Irish took the opener, 9-3.
W-P took a 2-1 lead in game two, but DeSales answered and survived a two-run seventh inning W-P rally to complete the sweep with an 8-4 win.
"The girls came through with some big hits," Irish coach Russ Vera said. "We were very aggressive on the base paths. Our pitching in the first game was real good and our pitching was pretty good in the second game."
Singles from Lexi Zander and Janelle Hartford, plus a W-P throwing error, led to a DeSales run in the home first of the opener.
DeSales loaded the bases with two outs and W-P was poised to wiggle off the hook, but Amanda Warnick delivered a two-out, two-run single and scooted all the way home when W-P threw the relay away to give the Irish a 5-0 lead after one.
"Our defense was a little tight in the first game," W-P coach Angie Potts said. "We settled down after that (first inning), but DeSales hit the ball well. We would've expected more of ourselves in that first game."
Singles from Ashlyn Lyons and Alex Buley and four walks led to three Irish runs in the fourth to push the lead to 9-0.
Megan Withers' run-scoring double, one of her three hits on the game, got W-P on the board in the top of the fifth.
A Jen Nichols single, an Ashley Wilson slap single and a sac fly from Hailey Goenen led to two W-P runs in the sixth, but W-P got no closer.
Warnick finished with a scoreless seventh as she went the distance in the Irish circle with seven strikeouts.
In the nightcap, singles from Taylor Moon and Goenen, aided by an Irish error, led to two runs and a 2-1 W-P lead after two at bats.
Lexi Zander and Hartford answered for the Irish with RBI singles to highlight a three-run, five-hit Irish second, as DeSales regained the lead for good at 4-2.
"We battled back," Vera said of being down 2-1. "The girls have learned, when we get down, not to get down on themselves. They have learned that there are a lot of innings left."
Hartford's double knocked in an Irish run in a two-run fourth, and Lyons' two-run triple highlighted the Irish fifth, as DeSales built an 8-2 lead going to the seventh.
A one-out double from Sam Moss ignited a two-run W-P seventh-inning rally. Withers reached on an infield single and Katy Hofer would drive them both home with a double, but Hofer was cut down as she tried to stretch it to a triple.
Lyons, an eighth grade left-hander, finished her complete-game effort in the circle by coaxing a fly to center as DeSales completed the sweep with the 8-4 win.
"We're learning, but still have a lot to learn," Vera said. "We're excited to be 6-0 in league."
Hofer and Moss led W-P with two hits each as W-P collected 10 hits in the nightcap and finished the day with 21 hits.
"I'm proud of the way we hit the ball," Potts said. "I thought we hit well. Overall, I'm not disappointed in the second game."
The Irish host Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia Saturday.
W-P, 2-2 in league, travels to Liberty Christian Saturday.
