MILTON-FREEWATER - Mac-Hi's softball team split a pair of games with the Baker Bulldogs, winning 3-2 and losing 7-2, in the Greater Oregon League openers for both schools.
The pitchers' duel in game one was Shawney Garcia of Mac-Hi versus Tori Brown of Baker. Both pitchers threw a complete game and gave up three walks.
Garcia had three strikeouts and Brown had seven strikeouts with one hit-by-pitch.
Both offenses pounded out five hits and Mac-Hi won by the one run.
Baker started the scoring with two runs in the second inning. A home run from Brown scored the first run. An error, fielder's choice and infield hit plated a second run.
Mac-Hi came back in the bottom of the inning to score a run. Andrea Roeder reached on an error and advanced on a passed ball. Roeder scurried around second and third to score on a muffed pick-off attempt by the catcher at second base, which also got past the back-up outfielder.
The Pioneers tied and took the lead in the fourth inning. Stephanie Baker had a lead-off single and was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice hit by Garcia. A pinch runner came in for Garcia, and the runner advanced to third on a hit to the right side by Lauren Sams.
Belen Betancourt walked and the next hitter struck out. Brittney Hall came to the plate with two outs and the sacks loaded. Hall hit a two-run single over the first basemen's head to score the tying and winning runs.
"The girls showed a lot of heart, coming back the way they did to pick up a win," Mac-Hi coach Nicole Christian said. "Brittney has been clutch for us in a few games now with two outs and she got the job done."
The Pioneers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after two innings in game two. Mac-Hi scored the run by a lead-off hit by Kayln Odman and Alyssa Harrington's RBI single.
The Bulldogs pounced on Mac-Hi pitching to score six runs in the top of the third inning. They scored six on five hits and one Mac-Hi error.
Mac-Hi responded with one run in the fifth. A lead-off walk to Roeder, fielder's choice to second, and a deep fly ball to right by Stephanie Baker moved Roeder to third. A passed ball and Roeder scored.
The Bulldogs added one more run in the sixth to win by five runs.
"We had a lot of nerves coming into these first league games," Christian said. "Baker took second last year in conference. So it's nice to come out with a split."
