EASTMONT, Wash. - The Wa-Hi baseball team lost a pair of one-run ball games, 6-5 and 4-3, here Friday afternoon against Eastmont in a Cascade Division match-up.
The losses drop the Blue Devils to 2-2 in the division and 5-5 overall. Eastmont improves to 3-1 in the division.
"The losses were tough one-run games," Wa-Hi Keith Gradwohl said, "our pitching did real well. We gave up some hits but we didn't give up any walks in either game."
The Devils rallied late in both games but fell short.
In game one, with two runners on, Morgan Maddess hit a deep shot to left field that the Eastmont outfielder caught and then smashed up against the wall. It turned out to be a sacrifice fly, not an extra base hit or hit that looked like it could be gone, said Gradwohl.
After just missing the three-run homer that could have given them the lead, the Blue Devils lost by one.
In game two, Conner Holbrook homered in the seventh inning to pull within one run, while another base knock followed. But Wa-Hi couldn't push in the would-be tying run in the final inning.
"It isn't a lack of effort and we're proud of that," Gradwohl said, "We're just not catching the breaks. We've got to keep up with our plan of working hard and get some breaks."
Wa-Hi plays Richland in a Cascade Division doubleheader at 2 p.m. Friday.
