WALLA WALLA - Natalie Leyland and Alexis Bobadilla had three hits apiece Saturday afternoon as Walla Walla Community College handed NWAACC Eastern Region-leading Wenatchee Valley its first league loss - an 8-4 setback in the second game of a conference doubleheader at Warrior Field.
The Knights, No. 4 in the latest NWAACC coaches poll, won the opener - which was shortened to five innings because of the mercy rule - by a 9-0 count.
Walla Walla, seventh in the latest poll, is now 7-5 in league play and 13-12 overall.
Wenatchee Valley is 11-1 and 18-3.
The Warriors trailed 2-0 in the nightcap before tying the game with a deuce in the third on a Danyelle Hutchison single.
Walla Walla took a 4-2 lead in the fifth on the first of two multi-RBI home runs by Bobadilla. With a runner on base, Bobadilla fouled off two bunt attempts before going yard.
Wenatchee tied the game with two runs in the sixth.
But the Warriors claimed the upper hand for good with four tallies in the bottom of the sixth.
Ashley Morrow scored the first run on a passed ball and Bobadilla followed with a three-run tater moments later.
"I'm very proud of our kids," WWCC coach Mike Staudenmaier said. "They really didn't play well in the first game, but battled to get a split with a very good Wenatchee ball club.
"Elayna Van Hess pitched a very good game (scattered 10 hits and struck out three) and competed to keep us in the game. The kids made plays and didn't have any errors."
Walla Walla hosts Columbia Basin for a league twin bill Tuesday at 5 p.m.
