Whitman men in first after opening round of golf tourney

MOSES LAKE, Wash. - Whitman College senior Steve Campbell fired a 2-over par 74 and was tied for sixth place after Saturday's opening round of the Northwest Conference Spring Golf Classic.

Linfield's Tyler Nelson topped the leaderboard at 4-under par 68. The only player to break 70 was Whitworth's Cameron Whittle, who finished with a 69.

The 36-hole tournament, which is taking place at The Links at Moses Point (6,965 yards), concludes with a second round on Sunday.

Whitworth was first the team scoring Saturday with a 293 total for its top four golfers. Puget Sound and Linfield were second and third, respectively, with 300 and 305 totals.

Pacific was in fourth place in the nine-school field with a 305, five strokes in front of Whitman. Other team scores were George Fox 320, Pacific Lutheran 328, Willamette 329, and Lewis & Clark 358.

Sophomore David DeVine shot 79 for Whitman's second-best first-round score.

Sophomore John Abercrombie and freshman Geoff Burks both carded an 80, one stroke better than freshman Peter Clark and two shots in front of freshman Drew Raher.
