Whitman's Saito leads Whitman women in spring classic


YAKIMA - Whitman College junior Sydney Saito shot 93 to pace Whitman College in Saturday's opening round of the Northwest Conference Women's Spring Golf Classic.

The 36-hole tournament, which is taking place at the Apple Tree Golf Course (5,847 yards), concludes with a second round on Sunday.

Whitworth's Emily Travis took the first-round lead with a 76. She was the only player in the field to break 80.

Whitman was in sixth place in the team scoring with a 380 total for its top four golfers. Senior Kelsi Evans and first-year teammate Caitlin Holland both shot 94 for the Missionaries.

Sophomore Allison Lodine and first-year Missionary Tate Head added matching 99s.

Whitworth was first in the team scoring with a 331 total, six shots in front of Puget Sound. George Fox and Linfield were also in the hunt with team scores of 341 and 343, respectively.

Pacific was in fifth place with a 360. Trailing Whitman's 380 were Pacific Lutheran at 401 and Willamette at 457. Lewis & Clark was unable to field a full team.
