WALLA WALLA -- Fire officials are still investigating the cause of a fire that damaged a local manufacturing company Monday.
The fire at Reiff Manufacturing, 670 B St. near the Walla Walla Airport, caused close to $200,000 in damage to the structure and its contents, said Walla Walla Fire District 4 Chief Rocky Eastman.
About four employees were in the warehouse when the fire broke out about 9:30 a.m. The workers tried unsuccessfully to extinguish the fire using fire extinguishers, Eastman said.
District 4 crews were aided by the Walla Walla Fire Department. Reiff is a manufacturer of fiberglass products. Chemicals in the building are believed to have caused the fire to burn intensely initially, although most of the flames were put out by 10 a.m.
Firefighters remained at Reiff through the afternoon checking for hot spots and conducting a general overhaul, Eastman said.
