Sept. 11, 1935 - April 9, 2010

Nancy A. Gerking left us to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on the morning of April 9, 2010. She fought a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, but was able to spend her last days in the comfort of her home surrounded by those that loved her.

Nancy was born on Sept. 11, 1935, to Gordon and Doris Sanford Talbott in Dayton. The family lived in Dayton until 1943, when they moved to Walla Walla.

Nancy attended Sharpstein and Prospect Point Schools and graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1954.

She met the love of her life, Lynden Gerking, on the school bus when she was just ten years old. They attended high school together and later married on April 10, 1955, at Grace Methodist Church in Walla Walla. Throughout their 55 years of marriage, Lynden and Nancy created a lasting legacy of memories, children, and grandchildren.

Being a mother and homemaker was her chosen and perfected profession. She was a wonderful cook and baker, and will always be known by family and friends as the best black-cap jelly maker around. Above all else, family was the most important aspect of her life. She enjoyed spending as much time with family as possible, including many camping trips, family reunions, and backyard barbeques.

Those that knew Nancy regarded her as a bargain shopper because she always knew where the best deals were and she loved to go to yard sales, rummage sales, and thrift shops. Another hobby of Nancy's was metal detecting. Just as she found treasures at yard sales, she took pleasure in finding treasures beneath the ground. Being outdoors and watching wildlife such as birds and deer was another pastime of Nancy's. She couldn't resist smaller dogs and had several of them throughout her life.

Nancy was a member of Grace United Methodist Church throughout her life. The church and church family were very important to her and she was especially devoted to decorating the church for holidays and special events. She participated in mission projects such as Operation Christmas Child, serving at the Christian Aid Center, and serving on the Pantry Shelf committee, as well as helping to organize the church rummage sales.

Nancy was an honest, compassionate, caring person with a million-dollar smile. The amazing wife, mom, and grandma that Nancy symbolized will be forever missed and remembered.

Nancy is survived by her husband, Lynden; and two sons and daughter-in-laws, Kevin and Carman Gerking of Walla Walla, and Keith and Megan Gerking of Pomeroy; three daughters and son-in-laws, Kristy and Robert McKinney of Walla Walla, Kathy and Randy Taylor of Prosser, and Kelly and Toby Gabel of Walla Walla; sixteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many other family members. She was preceded in death by her parents and numerous family members.

Viewing and visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 14, 2010, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Herring Groseclose Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 15, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the Grace United Methodist Church with Rev. Linda Weistaner officiating. Family suggests memorial contributions be made to Grace United Methodist Church, Walla Walla Community Hospice or the American Cancer Society through Herring Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder, Walla Walla, WA 99362. Online memorial at: http://memorialwebsites.legacy.com/
