$n$ Prizes, awards to be given to participants of Walla Walla-area Earth Day events

People who find alternative transportation April 22 may report on their way to work or school and thus enter a contest to win a new bike.

As part of next week's Earth Day events, the Walla Walla Area Earth Day Coordinating Committee will present awards and donated prizes to businesses, agencies and schools with the most members getting to work or school by green modes, such as bicycles, walking, carpooling or bus.

On the contest day, April 22, people will be asked to report how they got to work or school by turning in a report form to their organization. Everyone who participates will also be eligible for a lottery, which includes a grand prize of a new bicycle provided by Bicycle Barn for the event.

Winners will be announced at 1:30 p.m. on April 24 during the community-wide Earth Celebration Fair at Crawford Park in downtown Walla Walla.

In conjunction with the event, Valley Transit will also provide fare-free service all day April 22 to facilitate the competition and encourage green travel throughout the community.

Participating organizations include Walla Walla Community College, Walla Walla University, Whitman College, the cities of Walla Walla and College Place, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Washington State Penitentiary, Providence St. Mary Medical Center, Walla Walla General Hospital, the Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Coffey Communications, Baker Boyer Bank, Walla Walla YMCA, Seven Hills Winery and others.

Information and report forms for individuals and organizational are available at 522-0399 or by e-mailing sustainableww@charter.net.
