More than music will be spinning Saturday as Walla Walla's "bing bang music and stereo shop" Hot Poop observes the third annual Record Store Day, said owner Jim McGuinn.
Along with independent record stores across the nation, Washington's oldest at 210 E. Main St., will celebrate bouncing "back into the black" to commemorate how the once-extinct vinyl has found its way back to shelves, the Principle Poop said.
The free celebration runs all day Saturday in what McGuinn dubbed the "Presley Methodist of the Assumed Paradise Parking Lot Barbecue Boogie Revival."
The event will feature live performances from Northwest groups, including The Slooches, Take Back, Table of Contents, Plateau, Soul Status, Meet Me At Eight, Snack Attack, Bright City Magic and Joe Keown of The Blast. Other special guests will be announced.
Free Pepsi products and chips will be served. Backstage Bistro will be sell its famed barbecue pulled pork sandwiches.
Record Store Day links hundreds of independent music stores through a celebration of music, art and culture.
The event also features limited edition vinyl LPs and seven-inch 45s from Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Springsteen, John Lennon, the Rolling Stones, Tom Waits, The Doors, Jeff Beck, Elvis Costello, REM, Sonic Youth, Flaming Lips, Modest Mouse, Flogging Molly and others for sale.
In his announcement, McGuinn likened Record Store Day to "a Heritage Day for music fans who appreciate both the superior sound and simplicity of vinyl records.
"We at Hot Poop also hope that people will stop and reflect on the true genius of Thomas Alva Edison," he continued.
"Not only did he invent the phonograph and records to play on it, he should also be appreciated for having the foresight to invent the electric light bulb so that we wouldn't have to find our groove in total darkness."
The anniversary of a chilly treat should get a warm reception next week.
Walla Walla's DQ Grill Chill is getting in on the 25th anniversary celebration of the Blizzard, said owner Kerry Tierney.
To commemorate: Between April 19 and 25, buy one Blizzard of any size and get another of equal or lesser value for 25 cents.
That includes the featured Blizzard of the month, Ooey Gooey Caramel Brownie.
