WALLA WALLA -- Walla Walla Community College has been awarded a $3 million federal grant to expand its William A. Grant Water and Environmental Center, U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., announced Thursday.

The money comes from an Economic Development Administration grant, with the goal of expanding the center to draw more people into its course programs.

The water center was established in 2007 and offers courses and training on watershed restoration, fish recovery runs and water management.

Walla Walla Community College is working with the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation to expand the center and provide enhanced skills in environmental career fields, according to the news release. The project is projected to create 360 jobs and leverage $28 million in private investment.
