Pomeroy splits softball games with Tri-Cities Prep Friday

POMEROY - Pomeroy split two in softball play here Friday against Tri-Cities Prep.

The non-league games put the Pirates at 3-5 overall and holds them at 1-1 in league play.

"We're better than the way we played," said Pomeroy head coach Rob Monahan.

But with a series of injuries, ranging from a hurt knee to a neurological disorder, Monahan was pleased with the split.

"Frankly, to win game one was great," he said. "I woke up yesterday thinking I only had seven kids who'd be able to play. To get a win over anyone above about the third grade is great for us."

Five Pirates playes out of their position, including usual starting pitcher HayLee Holler, who played at first base because of limited movement.

Backup pitcher Melissa Bartlow did well, he said.

"She pitched her guts out," Monahan said. "She had trouble finding strikes all day."

And they had a tough time finding a rhythm against pitcher Erica Cole in the second game.

"We were off-balance," he said. "Except for Stephanie Tewalt, who hit phenomenally."

Tewalt had four hits, including a home run.

But the top five girls on the pitching card were 0-25 for the day.

"That's a little bit of a challenge," he said.

But with so many injuries, Monahan was proud of the results.

"I'm really proud of the girls," he said. "They stuck in there through the see-saw of the second game. We had tying runs in the seventh but we couldn't bring them in."

The injuries were "just a weird conglomeration of stuff," Monahan said. He expects the team to be healthy next week.

And he's looking to future games.

"We've got six games coming up that matter," he said. "We need to be healthy for those, and we need to get HayLee healthy to pitch those."

The Pirates play double headers with Touchet and Liberty Christian next week, and Garfield-Palouse April 27.

"Those are the games that matter," Monahan said. "We're playing for those."

Pomeroy plays at Touchet Wednesday.
