YAKIMA - The Walla Walla Community College women swept a pair of non-region softball contests, 19-0 over Gray's Harbor and 4-2 over Bellevue, at the NWAACC crossover tournament here Saturday.
In game one, the Warriors jumped on the undermanned Chokers early, scoring three runs in the first inning and eight more in the second. WWCC coach Mike Staudenmaier pulled his starters for the top of the third, but the second string tacked on eight more runs in the next two innings. The game ended 19-0 after five innings due to the mercy rule.
Pitcher Elayna Van Hess finished the game with a one-hit shut-out.
Lyndsey Minnich, Kayla Hutcheson, Danyelle Hutchison, and Kelsie Didion all homered in the game for the Warriors.
Game two was a match of ranked NWAACC teams, as No. 6 Bellevue locked Viking horns with the No. 7 Warriors. The Warriors earned the win thanks to outstanding pitching by Van Hess, Staudenmaier said.
"More than our hitting, Elayna's (Van Hess) pitching was the difference," he said. "She threw the ball really well. Bellevue's a ranked team. She kept the ball down against them."
Shaila Rivers led the Warrior offense with four hits on the day. Minnich followed up her three-hit game one performance with another pair of hits off the Bulldogs.
The Warriors left 12 men on base in the game.
"We certainly could have scored more runs," said Staudenmaier, "but we got runs when we needed to and held on."
The Warriors, now 16-13, continue the tournament today at 1 p.m. against Olympic before wrapping up at 3 p.m. against Edmonds.
