Wa-Hi boys tennis splits matches in Wenatchee

The Blue Devils net a 4-3 win over Eastmont Saturday before losing 7-0 to Wenatchee.

WENATCHEE - Wa-Hi's boys tennis team opened up a road trip with a 4-3 victory over Eastmont Saturday morning, but then dropped a 7-0 decision at Wenatchee in the afternoon.

The Blue Devils pulled out the victory over the Wildcats with the third doubles match victory, with James Tupper-Bridges and Danny Wilson downing Eastmont's Travis Cronin and Justin Yusi, 6-2, 6-4.

"This was another classic Wildcat versus Blue Devil match with the fourth and final team point coming from the No. 3 doubles team for the second consecutive year," Wa-Hi coach Ted Cummings said. "Danny and James were up a set and found themselves down 0-3 before a coach's timeout was called. After a short and spirited chat, the boys responded and won five straight games and eventually ended the second set 6-4.

"Our 1, 2 and 3 singles players (Cameron Davis, Jack Crouter and Blake Rowley) all wrapped up very close contests and this is quite an improvement over the Moses Lake dual match one week ago."

Tables turned on the Blue Devils against the Panthers.

"Playing Wenatchee each year is an opportunity to measure oneself against the best our league has to offer in talent and intensity," Cummings said. "Even without their top two players today, their depth and confidence is difficult to match.

"In No. 3 singles, Blake nearly pulled off a second-set win after dropping the first set decisively against Troy Patterson," he said. "Our No. 3 doubles team of Ruben (Kuznetsov) and Brendan (McKinney) fought through to the very end, losing in a third-set match tie-break (10-5). Their net play was quite impressive at times and that's what we strive for on this team."

Wa-Hi's record is now 4-3, while Eastmont drops to 3-4 and Wenatchee improves to 6-0. The Blue Devils host Hanford at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
