COLLEGE PLACE - Walla Walla University's softball team picked up two victories over Eastern Washington University's club team here Sunday, 8-0 and 13-1.
"Defensively, it was probably the best doubleheader we've played," Wolves coach Mike Jemenez said. "Our outfielders were making great plays, people were getting to bases they needed to get to and our pitchers were throwing strikes and getting ahead of the count."
The Wolves put all the runs they would need in the opener on the scoreboard in the second inning with a five-spot. They added two more in the third and a solo run in the sixth to end the game.
In the nightcap, EWU opened with a run in the first inning which was answered by WWU in its half of the inning.
The Wolves followed a single second-inning run with nine third-inning scores, and two more in the fourth as the game ended in the fifth.
Chelsea Aka and Andrea Pedro teamed up in the circle for the Wolves in the opening win, giving up one hit. Pedro and Ashley Martinez pitched the nightcap allowing five EWU hits.
Elizabeth Jones led the WWU 23-hit parade on the day with six hits in the twin bill.
"We can be competitive with really good teams," Jemenez said. "These club teams we should be beating, we're doing it. In the past, we had trouble beating the club teams."
The Wolves, now 7-14, next travel to Cheney for a twin bill against the same EWU club team at 2 p.m. Friday.
