MOSES LAKE - Wa-Hi's boys golfers placed second at a Big Nine Conference pod match at the Moses Lake Country Club here Monday.
The boys finished with a team score of 300, two strokes behind Richland's 298.
"It's the best showing we've have all year," said coach Jim Smith. "To only lose to Richland by two, shooting 300 - those are things that, at the start of the year, I didn't think we'd be able to accomplish."
Wa-Hi's No. 1 golfer Drew Reinland paced the team, shooting 70 on the par-71 course. Jake Hanson finished with 74, Dean Atkinson with 76, Travis Morrison at 80, and Nick Atwood had a non-counting 82 and Wade Hicks 92.
"The kids are getting better every week," Smith said. "That's good to see this time of the year. The key to golf is to get the No. 3 and No. 4 guys shooting well. The No. 1 and No. 2 are usually there, but if the No. 3 and No. 4 can post good scores, then you can shoot 300. I was really, really pleased to come in with that score."
Hanford finished one stroke behind the Blue Devils, with 15 teams competing on a gorgeous day, Smith said.
"We got done and some of the kids had sunburns," he said. "It was a great day for golf."
Wa-Hi travels to Wenatchee next Tuesday for a 1 p.m. pod match at Three Lakes Golf Club.
