LA GRANDE - DeSales won an 8-4 baseball game against La Grande here Tuesday.
The score was 1-1 after the first inning, when the Irish had two batters hit by pitches, stacking first and second. Brandon Arellano hit a single to load the bases and Spencer Smith singled in a run.
Tommy Gregg and Mat Wujek both hit ground balls for fielders' choice, scoring in the next two and moving the score to 4-1.
The Irish posted zeros again until the sixth, when Kyle Lindgren and Logan Hoeft were hit by pitches for the second time, Arellano had a single, Tommy Gregg singled, moving Lindgren home and keeping the bases loaded, and Wujek hit a three-run double for a quick four runs.
"I was pleased with the outing today," said DeSales coach Kim Cox. "La Grande is always a well-coached opponent, they're a good team. Any time we can get a win there, it's something to build on."
The Irish do need to work on defense, Cox said.
"Victor Mata went the distance for us on the mound, but we didn't play very good defense behind him," Cox said. "They're way too good a team for some of those errors."
The Irish are 11-2. They host Asotin at 4 p.m. today, weather permitting.
