Hazel M. Stoolfire, 120 Elzora, Milton-Freewater, passed away April 18, 2010, at Evergreen Rehabilitation and Retirement Center in Milton-Freewater at the age of 97 years. Graveside services in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery on Friday, April 23, 2010 at 1 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner's Hospital through the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main, Milton-Freewater, Oregon 97862.
Mrs. Stoolfire was born June 28, 1912, in Elgin, the daughter of Willis and Cynthia Colpitts Carlton. She lived with her family in Elgin for a time. She later moved to Tuttle, Ida. where her parents owned and operated a diversified farm. She attended school in Tuttle. On Sept. 8, 1931, she married Wallace Stoolfire in Tuttle. The couple continued living in Hagerman and Tuttle. They later moved to Walla Walla, and then to Milton-Freewater in 1941. They purchased their home and she had lived there for 62 years. Mrs. Stoolfire had worked as a cook, waitress, and dishwasher. The last restaurant she had worked at was the M-F Supper Club, retiring in 1969. She had also worked at Mojonnier Fruit Packing for a time. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing and spending time with her family and grandchildren. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hagerman, and the VFW Auxiliary. Mr. Stoolfire preceded her in death in August 1972.
She is survived by four sons, Lyle Carlton of Ridge Field, Wash., Robert Wallace Stoolfire of Troy, Ida., Willis "Lee" Stoolfire of Pendleton, George Stoolfire of Pilot Rock; five daughters, Lila Hudson and Rebecca Stoolfire both of Milton-Freewater, Clara Ganoe of Mattawa, Wash., Eunice Wickert of Pendleton, Mary Ellen Stauter of Mustang, Okla.; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, great-great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, two grandchildren, and a son-in-law.
