RITZVILLE - DeSales' boys and girls came in second on the Ritzville Golf Course here Thursday.
The boys lost to Tri-Cities Prep by one stroke, shooting 477 to Prep's 476.
But DeSales golfer Ryan Baumgart was the medalist of 17 participating boys, shooting a combined 75 on two trips around the par-35 course.
"The last three times he's played, it's been his first time on the course, since he's a freshman," said DeSales head coach Lon Olson. "So he'll play the first nine holes and figure out what he needs to do the second time around. He seems to respond pretty well."
Baumgart scored 39 and 36 for the combined score of 75.
Scores for the Irish were Kyle Konen, shooting 92, Bryce Scott 95, Ben Konen 97, and a not-counting 126 from Mat Zimmerman.
Waitsburg-Prescott's Dakota Baker finished No. 4 overall for 88. He is the only W-P golfer.
Lind-Ritzville finished third for the boys at 494.
Tri-Cities Prep won from the girls' marker, shooting a combined 308. The Irish shot 366 and Lind-Ritzville 403.
Girls' medalist was Prep's Samantha Pegram, shooting 93.
DeSales' scores were Kelly Martin with 109, Ashton Montgomery 120, Alyssa Lyons 137, and Bethany Konen at 141.
"The girls scores are starting to come down," Olson said. "They're playing better and working hard."
Overall, the team is improving.
"We're starting to get it together," Olson said. "The kids are a little more consistent. I think they're finding their game individually and team-wise, and they're starting to score better."
There was a light breeze on the course, but otherwise good conditions, he said.
"We can thank the weather gods for being good to us," Olson said. "When it blows up there, you can get blown off the course. But it was another beautiful day."
DeSales hosts Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia, St. John-Endicott and Pomeroy Tuesday at Veteran's Memorial.
Pomeroy is one of the better teams in the Class 2B league, Olson said.
"We're looking forward to matching with them," he said.
