The Walla Walla Sweets Roller Girls are giving newcomers a shot at roller derby Monday.
The "fresh-meat tryouts" take place at 6 p.m. at the Village Youth Center in College Place, Eighth and Bade streets.
Monday's event will mark the first tryouts since the group was organized said league Secretary Barbara Mosher. She said the Sweets will largely be looking for basic skating skills.
Potential team members must be 21 and older. They should wear comfortable clothes for skating. Skates can be provided for those who don't have their own, she said. The Sweets typically skate in full protective gear, but that is not a requirement for the tryouts.
Those who make the cut will likely practice one year before competing for the Sweets against other teams. Team practice is held twice a week - Mondays and Thursdays - for about an hour and a half.
Walla Walla's roller derby team is a diverse group of community-minded women ranging in age from 21 to 50 and with all kinds of professional backgrounds, from stay-at-home mothers to professionals. In addition to roller derby, the organization focuses on community service and is seeking a nonprofit status.
