Warriors win three of four softball games

WWCC splits with Spokane on Friday, but posts two big wins against Big Bend in Saturday fastpitch action.

WALLA WALLA - Walla Walla Community College claimed three of four softball games over two NWAACC East Region rivals here Friday and Saturday.

The Warriors split with Spokane, winning 6-3 and losing 10-4, then blasting Big Bend 13-5 and 11-3 in a shortened mercy-rule twin-bill.

Friday's contests paired them with Spokane. The two teams are tied for second in the East Region.

Both scored in the first frame with WWCC holding the 2-1 advantage after one. WWCC increased its lead in the fourth with a 3-spot that Spokane countered a half-inning later, with two runs in the fifth. The Warriors tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth and Elayna Van Hess completed the game with a shut-out seventh inning.

Van Hess allowed only four hits in the victory and Alaura Seley homered for the Warriors.

The second game Friday started in near-identical fashion. Both teams planted 2s on the scoreboard in the first. Spokane posted a second two-run inning in the third and another in the fifth, putting WWCC down 6-2 after four-and-a-half.

The Warriors responded with a two-run inning of in the bottom of the fifth. Spokane put the game away in the sixth, as four Sasquatch crossed the plate.

Spokane bopped 14 fair balls in the contest, led by Stephanie Chrystal's three hits. Both Chrystal and Kelsey Raines homered for the Sasquatch.

Lyndsey Minnich homered in the losing effort for Walla Walla.

The Warriors continued their unfortunate first-inning runs-allowed streak in Saturday's first contest against last-place Big Bend.

Big Bend scored two in the first, but Walla Walla responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Warrior second baseman Kathryn Jones got the third inning rolling with a 2-run shot over the fence in straightaway center.

Six hits, three errors and a hit batsman later, the Warriors held an 11-2 lead. Fourteen Warriors came to the plate in the eight-run inning.

A two-out, 3-run home run by Big Bend's Brooke Vincent in the top of the fifth kept the mercy rule at bay for a few minutes.

The Warriors plated a pair of runs on three singles and two errors in the bottom of the fifth to complete the mercy killing, 13-5.

Jones finished the game one hit short of the cycle, with a single, triple and home run.

The Warriors scored a run in every inning but the third of the second game Saturday.

Walla Walla ended the game in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs on three doubles, two singles, a hit batter and an error. No Warrior player was retired in the inning.

Only once, with the score at 6-3 with no outs in the top of the sixth, did the outcome seem in doubt. Alexis Bobadilla came on in relief of starter Van Hess to retire three straight Viking batters - two by strike out - to end the inning.

"We had really good pitching (Saturday)," WWCC coach Mike Staudenmaier said. "Both Elayna (Van Hess) and Alexis (Bobadilla) pitched extremely well. Then we just hit the ball and played good defense.

"It was a good weekend, 3-1, and it keeps us in second place," he continued.

The Warriors raised their season record to 20-14, 11-7 in the East Region.
