Pomeroy's boys golf past rain storm

WALLA WALLA - Most of the groups in a prep golf tournament at Veterans Memorial Golf Course beat Tuesday's downpour.

DeSales hosted the four-school matchup. The Irish boys and girls both placed second.

Pomeroy won the boys match, but DeSales' Ryan Baumgart was medalist, shooting 73 on the par-72 course.

He was two strokes over on the back, but still had a good day, said DeSales golf coach Lon Olson.

"He lost it a little on the back nine, but I really wouldn't call that losing," Olson said.

Pomeroy's scores were Trevor Koberstein 80, Joel Meyers 83, Ryan Koberstein 87, Austin Starin 92 and Anthony DellaMaggiora 112.

DeSales' scores were Baumgart's 73, Bryce Scott 85, Kyle Konen 94, Ben Konen 102 and Justin Meyer 106.

Mat Zimmerman shot a non-counting 127 and Chris Xie finished 13 holes before the rain started, shooting 62 on the front nine.

Waitsburg-Prescott golfer Dakota Baker shot a 98.

Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia scored 474 and St. John-Endicott 533.

Two girls golfed per team. St. John-Endicott had a low score of 201, DeSales had 232 and Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia had 276.

St. John-Endicott's Erin Schuster was medalist, shooting 98.

DeSales' girls scores were Ashton Montgomery, shooting 114, and Kelly Martin, 118.

DeSales' Alyssa Lyons shot 74 and Bethany Konen 75 on the front nine before being rained out at the 15th hole.

Mac-Hi's Allison Varady shot 108.

"I continue to see our scores coming around," Olson said. "Anytime we can shoot 110 and under, that's our goal."

This match accomplished that.

"The boys are there - this was by far our best team outing, and possibly for the girls but we couldn't get all the holes in," he said.

All but two groups finished before heavy rain began to fall. One of those groups, from Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia, was determined to finish.

"Those boys came in soaking wet," Olson said.

The greens were aerated last week, slowing them down, he said.

"Putting was slow and a little bumpy, but the scores weren't too bad in those conditions," he said.

DeSales, Dayton and Tri-Cities Prep play at noon next Thursday at Columbia Point in Richland. Liberty Christian is hosting the match.
