Whitman alumni hand Reapers 22-17 rugby defeat

WALLA WALLA - The Whitman College Reapers rugby club hosted its alumni in the season-closing match last weekend, with the alums taking a 22-17 decision.

The first period saw the alumni open the scoring with an unconverted try by fullback Charlie Wyman.

The currents answered with an unconverted try by prop Marshall Baker and a converted one by flyhalf John Henry Heckendorn.

In the second period, the alumni scored tries by right wing Eric McAlvey and left wing Steve Gillentine. Prop Max Rausch touched one try down for the currents to bring the game to a 17-all tie going into the final period.

A late kick and chase resulted in a game-winning try for the alumni by Wyman.

The Reapers finish the season at 4-6. At the awards ceremony, honorees for the Reapers included Most Valuable Players Marshall Baker; Rookie of the Year Allan Okello; True Rugger Michael Hanley.

The Reapers next take to the field again in late August.
