Check 'em out: New wineries to open for Spring Release

Looking for something new to check out during Spring Release weekend?

Several new wineries are opening their doors for their first barrel-tasting event, according to an announcement from the Walla Walla Valley Wine Alliance, the winery and grower partnership organization that promotes the wineries, wine and vineyards of the Walla Walla Valley Appellation.

Grantwood Winery, Reynvaan Family Vineyards, Robison Ranch Cellars, SuLei Cellars, Tero Estates and Tranche Cellars are among the new wineries opening the doors of their cellars and tasting rooms to showcase their new releases this weekend. Rotie Cellars will also welcome visitors to its tasting room.

Spring Release takes place Saturday and Sunday, but many wineries will also offer extended hours today, Friday and Monday, as well as an array of special events from live music to special demonstrations.

Locations of those new wineries are: Grantwood Winery, 1442 S. Second Ave.; Reynvaan Family Vineyards, 6557 Cottonwood Road; Robison Ranch Cellars, 2839 Robison Ranch Road; SuLei Cellars, 1509 Beet Road; Tero Estates, 52015 Seven Hills Road; Tranche Cellars, 705 Berney Drive; and Rotie Cellars, 31 E. Main St.

Get coffee for a cause at Ninth Avenue shop Dutch Bros. Coffee on Friday.

The Oregon-based company's 154 locations will donate proceeds from all coffee sales that day to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The event is part of an annual tradition for Dutch Bros. in honor of the late Dane Boersma, the company's co-founder. Boersma was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease in 2005 and died last year. In 2009 the company contributed $80,000 to the MDA for research and family services funding, according to an announcement from the company.

The local Dutch Bros. operation is owned by Dave Beamer. The business operates 5:30 a.m.-11 p.m.

The unofficial holiday for comic book fans is soon approaching.

Free Comic Book Day takes place Saturday, and Walla Walla's North Star Comics is preparing for the celebration.

Selected comic books will be given away free that day to all who enter the store between 1 and 5 p.m. that day.

Giveway items are limited to stock on hand.

Walla Walla's E Street Driving School is revving up for a new class.

Starting May 18, the Second Avenue drivers education school will offer a new class that runs Tuesdays, Wednesday and Thursdays 4:30-6:30 p.m., said co-owner Brian Luxton. The class runs through June 23.

Additionally, E Street Driving School will offer Summer Fast Track classes that start June 14. Those classes offer morning or afternoon options to accommodate summertime schedules.
