Over the past year, I have noticed a change in this area. The change has been re-enforced by different articles in the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin. Gangs growing in membership, methamphetamine usage up, a jail break from the Walla Walla County jail, are just a few of those stories.
It seems that our small community, and county, are suffering from growing pains. We are transitioning from a town, to a city. This is something that needs to be addressed, and planned for. And, we need professional people making those decisions. People with a plan, people with a vision.
I'm not up on who's a "good old boy," or who's part of what system, but it seems to me, that if you want change, then you need to pick someone who is outside of the system, so as not to repeat the mistakes of the past.
I have taken the time to check out all of the fine men running for county sheriff, and there is only one who is professional and has a vision for the future, John Turner. I would encourage everyone to go to his website and read it for yourself. Then vote for professionalism in the county sheriff's office, vote for John Turner.
And, while I'm at it, I was surprised that we allowed another county asset to slip away, but we can change that too.
Frank Brown, who wanted to do a professional job, was discouraged from office because he wanted to do a professional job, and just didn't fit into the "good old boy" system. I say, write his name in, and bring him back.
We need to demand more from our public servants, not discourage them from being professional.
