Sweets tie series with 3-2 victory

Walla Walla is three games behind Moses Lake for the wild card.


COWLITZ - The Walla Walla Sweets came back for a win to tie the series against Cowlitz Wednesday night.

The Sweets defeated the Black Bears, 3-2, on Cowlitz's own Story Field. The win moves Walla Walla to 17-27 and three games behind Kelowna in the wild card race for playoff, with four games left in the regular season. They're nine games behind East division leader Wenatchee.

Walla Walla opened strong. Christian Ramirez singled to first and then came home on a Dennis Holt sacrifice.

They posted two hits in that inning - Ramirez and Elliot Stewart - which was one more than they managed in the first six innings of Tuesday's shutout.

The Sweets posted another run and hit in the second inning. Josh Daniel walked and Adrian Williams singled him home.

Walla Walla closed scoring in the fifth, when a Stewart double. They posted three hits that inning - Adrian Williams, Stewart and Ramirez.

Stewart's double was the only multiple-base hit for the Sweets. Cowlitz posted two. Stewart and Williams led the Sweets with RBI.

Cowlitz tried to mount a comeback in the top of the seventh, posting two runs off four hits, but the damage was done and 3-2 score stood through the end of the game.

The Sweets left eight runners stranded en route to the victory, while Cowlitz stranded nine and out-hit the Sweets, 10-9.

Jacob Overbay pitched the first eight for the Sweets and Alex Levin relieved him in the ninth. Overbay allowed both runs on nine hits, walking two.

Kevin Bosson threw for Corvallis through the eighth, allowing nine hits and walking one. Richi Sandoval cleaned up in the ninth, walking two but keeping the Sweets' scoreless.

The Sweets and Black Bears play for the series win at 6:35 p.m. today in Cowlitz.
