Black Bears put bite on Sweets' postseason hopes

COWLITZ, Wash. - The final score from Story Field here Thursday spelled the end of the Walla Walla Sweets' postseason hopes.

The Sweets lost to the Cowlitz Black Bears, 9-1, and dropped out of contention for the final wildcard berth into the playoffs.

The Sweets also lost the series to Cowlitz, winning just one in three games.

They're in last place in the East Division, three games behind Moses Lake, which took the final playoff spot.

The Sweets' only score in the loss came in the seventh inning. Josh Daniel doubled, then came in on a Danny Poplawski double.

Poplawski never got farther, as the next batter struck out.

But and any positive gains they made were quickly marginalized in the bottom of the seventh, when the Black Bears posted four runs, including a two-run Zack Tanida home run to make it 9-1, the score that stood.

The Sweets stranded five batters in the effort, and the Black Bears left seven waiting.

Zach Clanton allowed nine hits and took the loss for the Sweets, while Cowlitz's Chris Dennis pitched the win. Clanton and relievers Dennis Holt and Jordan McLaughlin walked three Black Bears and allowed 13 hits in the effort, while Dennis and his backup crew walked two and combined for four hits.

The Sweets are 17-28 and play their last stand of the series against West division leader Corvallis at 6:35 p.m. today.
