WALLA WALLA -- A truckload food giveaway for those needing food assistance will take place Aug. 10 from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., the Blue Mountain Action Council has announced.
The distribution will take place at the Walla Walla Housing Authority gym, 501 Cayuse St., through the gym's south entrance.
Second Harvest of the Inland Northwest will bring a semi truckload of fresh and frozen foods.
Those receiving food must self-declare they are "low-income' and in need of food; eligibility verification isn't required. Food will be given only to those present, not on behalf of other individuals and families. No appointment is necessary, and the event will occur rain or shine. Attendees are asked to bring an empty box.
Volunteers from RSVP and other community members will be on hand to assist, said BMAC Community Services Director Kathy Covey in a news release.
In addition to the free food distribution, BMAC staff will be available to assist with applications for food stamps (the Basic Food Program).
This is part of a series of similar very successful events. Attendance has ranged from 300 to 500, and there has always been plenty of food available, Covey said.
The distribution is co-sponsored by Blue Mountain Action Council, the Walla Walla Housing Authority, and Second Harvest Inland Northwest's Spokane warehouse.
