Pomeroy City Council members are Dennis Gillis, James Fuchs, Michael Akers, Stephanie Newberg and Donna Hunt. Mayor is Alan Gould. With Akers and Newberg absent Tuesday the council:

  • SHERIFF: Garfield County Sheriff Deputy Drew Hyer introduced a new deputy, Mike Melcher. Melcher will attend the police academy beginning at the end of August. Hyer said there were break-ins last week, and the Sheriff's Office is investigating a possible meth lab and other drug-related activities.

  • AGREEMENT: Signed an interlocal agreement with the Sheriff's Office to allow the county to use the old city jail for evidence storage. Unanimous.

  • CHAMBER: After discussion, tabled a request by Pomeroy Chamber of Commerce to locate the Chamber office in City Hall approximately two to four hours per month. Unanimous.

  • OPENING: Mayor Gould asked that the opening on the Planning and Zoning Commission not be filled until the city/county commission is established.

  • MITIGATION PLAN: Learned the city's copy of the Southeastern Washington Multi-Hazardous Mitigation Plan is available for review.

  • PUMP HOUSE: Learned Garfield County Hospital has asked to use the city's pump house for signage. The hospital would landscape and maintain the area.

  • FIBER OPTICS: Learned new fiber optics will be installed through town. The company has submitted preliminary information to Gould and to public works director Kenny Landkammer.

  • POWER POLE: Authorized Gould to sign the easement for Pacific Power Light to install a power pole by the Courthouse for the remodeling project. Unanimous.

  • CEMETERY: Landkammer said the irrigation system at the cemetery has improved. He said he has received help in catching up with maintenance from trustees at the jail.

  • STREET PROGRAM: Learned the city does not qualify for any street funding from the Transportation Improvement board.

  • VARIANCE: Learned a public hearing will be held Aug. 23 on the Port of Garfield's variance request.
