WW woman pleads guilty in injury crash

Briseida M. Garcia had been drinking when she crashed April 11, injuring two passengers.

WALLA WALLA -- A Walla Walla woman pleaded guilty this morning in Superior Court to two criminal charges stemming from a one-vehicle, injury collision in April on Sandpit Road.

Briseida M. Garcia, 18, of 712 Edith Ave., entered guilty pleas to one count each of vehicular assault, which is a felony, and driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor, a gross misdemeanor.

Garcia admitted driving recklessly while under the influence when the wreck occurred about 1:30 a.m. April 11.

Two passengers, Nina Pimentel and Araceli Negrete, reportedly suffered various injuries. They told officials that "Garcia was going very fast, probably over 70, when she came to the 's' curve at the 1600 block," according to a Sheriff's Office report filed in court.

"She went onto the shoulder and then out into the field, rolling the vehicle several times," the report says.

Garcia also had been charged with a second count of vehicular assault, in addition to one count of third-degree theft for allegedly stealing $39 in merchandise from Macy's in Walla Walla in June. But those charges will be dismissed in exchange for her guilty pleas.

The case is being handled in the Juvenile Department of Superior Court because Garcia was 17 when the wreck occurred. Under laws pertaining to juvenile defendants, the standard-range term of incarceration Garcia faces is up to 30 days on each count to which she pleaded guilty. If Judge Donald W. Schacht goes along with a prosecution recommendation, Garcia won't have to serve any time if she successfully completes probation.

Sentencing will be held later.

Garcia, who also was injured in the wreck, is not being incarcerated pending sentencing in her case.
