Combine sparks fire that scorches 800 acres

PRESCOTT -- Fire in a combine ignited a field of wheat and stubble, resulting in loss of an estimated 50 acres of standing wheat near Harvey Shaw Road, Lamar Road and State Route 124 on Monday afternoon.

The fire was reported about 3:30 p.m., and fire trucks from every district in Walla Walla County responded, according to Fire District 7 Fire Chief Tim Mayberry.

The combine driver was able to drive the machine to a summer fallow area, and the combine sustained minimal damage, Mayberry said.

A total of about 800 acres burned, Mayberry said. He estimated 500 acres of stubble was blackened, along with approximately 250 acres of waste ground.

The land is leased by farmer Greg Fletcher, Mayberry said.
