Fred W. Sporleder

Fred Walter Sporleder was born on November 6, 1915 to Edwin Frank and Lydia Preas Sporleder in Walla Walla, Washington. He was one of ten children. He attended Prospect Point School and graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1934. After his marriage to Helen Dorthea Mengee and the birth of their first child, Fred Jr., the family moved to Oakland, California in 1937 and he was drafted into the US Navy in 1945 serving in WWII.
After his discharge from the Navy in 1947, he and his brother, Edwin, started a men's clothing & accessory store called Sporleders. In 1980, they expanded to include women's wear. He sold the business with plans to retire in 1994.
Fred's community involvement included Boy Scouts, Assumption Church, Knights of Columbus, Catholic Children & Family Services, Sierra Club, American Legion, American Cancer Society, United Way, Junior Chamber of Commerce, Evergreen Apparel Guild, Downtown Walla Walla Beautification Committee, Lilly Rice Center, Walla Walla Farm Labor Camp, Toastmaters, St. Vincent DePaul and numerous other organizations adorning many awards for his accomplishments.
Outside of business and community involvement, Fred had a passion for Boxing, serving as ring official at the Washington State Prison for 33 years. His other passion was fishing. At 85 years old, Fred became the oldest jet boat pilot running the Snake River into Hells Canyon.
Fred is survived by his daughters, Randy Warren, Ann Cox (Jim), and Susie Sporleder, all of Walla Walla and daughter in-law Nancy Sporleder of Sacramento, California; sister, Corleen Lit of Nampa, ID & brother, Bob Sporleder of Walla Walla, WA, 9 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren and numerous nieces & nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife Dorothea, son, Marc Sporleder and son, Fred "Duke" Sporleder Jr.
Viewing & visitation will be held on Friday, August 20, 2010 from 2:00 until 8:00 PM at the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder, Walla Walla, WA. The Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2010 at 10 AM at Assumption Catholic Church with Father Tim Hays, Celebrant. Interment will be private. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Vincent DePaul, the American Cancer Society and Walla Walla Hospice through the Herring Funeral Home.
