PASCO - The deadline to sign up for a free pesticide disposal event is fast approaching.
Farmers, businesses, landowners and others have until Friday to register with the Washington state Department of Agriculture. The collection will take place on Sept. 28 in Pasco.
Agricultural and commercial-grade products accepted for disposal include insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, rodenticides and most chemicals that kill, repel or prevent unwanted pests. Empty pesticide containers, fertilizers, motor oil and household hazardous waste will not be accepted.
People who sign up will receive supplies necessary to protect broken or leaky containers to ensure safe transport to the collection site. They will also be provided with directions to the site, hours of operation and transportation documents. Names of participants do not appear on any retained documents. Upon request, the department will provide free assistance to help inventory unwanted pesticides and package leaky containers.
During last year's collection, participants turned in more than 167,000 pounds of unwanted pesticides, and of that amount more than 21,000 pounds came from Pasco.
