Coston rallies past Malby to win Northwest Open

WALLA WALLA - Professional Ryan Malby of Kalispell, Mont., recorded the best score of the weekend Saturday at the Wine Valley Golf Club during the first day of the first Winemaker Pro-Am.

Malby toured the par-72 links course in 7-under-par 65 to win the gross championship in the pro division during the first round of the two-day competition. He finished just one shot in front of Spokane's Corey Prugh, who carded a 6-under 66.

On Sunday, Malby shot a 3-under 69 but had to settle for second place behind Jeff Coston of Blaine, Wash., who was the winner with a 4-under-par 68. Ted Westling of Portland was alone in third place with a 71, one shot better than par and three in back of the winner, and Brady Sharp, an assistant pro at the Walla Walla Country Club, was in a four-way logjam for fourth place with an even-par 72.

Walla Walla Country Club head professional Lisa Hyland finished atop the professional division net field both days. She and Kennewick's Chris Isaacson shared the top spot on Saturday with 70s, and Hyland was alone at the top on Sunday with a 71, two strokes better than Isaacson's 73.

Walla Walla's Gregg Corn was one of three players to fire a 2-over-par 74 on Saturday to lead the amateur division. Also in at 74 were Brent Stewart of Denver, Colo., and Troy Teal of Pasco. Walla Walla's Gregg Fink recorded a 76 and was tied for fourth place with Grant Yoshihara of Spokane.

Local player Lonnie Ness led amateur net players on Saturday with a 62. He won by four shots over a quartet of players, including Walla Walla's Annette Bergevin, who all shot 66.

Sunday's amateur winners were Jeff Ballard of Richland, who shot even-par 72 to take gross honors, and Tom Boobel of Spokane, who was the net winner with a 68.

Corn and fellow Walla Wallans Dan Kaylor shot 76s to tie for second in gross play, with Walla Walla's Bill Herron another shot back at 77. Gary Bergevin and Tom Glase, both of Walla Walla, matched 69s to share second place net.

In the two-day team competition, Kalispell's Malby and a trio of Seattle amateurs - Charles Weaver, Michael Nielsen and Mike Little - finished first with a 247 score. They finished four shots in front of the Spokane team of Prugh, Boobel, Yoshihara and Hayez.

John Thorsnes, head pro at Wine Valley, and his amateur team of Stewart, Kaylor and Ness finished third with a 255 score.

The Winemaker Pro-Am was co-sponsored by four local wineries - Balboa Winery, Dunham Cellars, Bergevin Lane and Russell Creek. The tournament was a prlude to the 54-hole Northwest Open that began this morning at Wine Valley.
