WALLA WALLA -- A man who stabbed an acquaintance in June resulting in serious injuries was sentenced in Superior Court on Monday afternoon to eight months in the County Jail.

An apologetic Tylur D. Tiedemann, 19, of 213 W. Maple St., was ordered to serve near the high end of the three- to nine-month standard range he faced after pleading guilty Aug. 9 to second-degree assault. The prosecution had recommended the upper end of the sentencing range, while the defense was requesting less time and partial confinement for Tiedemann, allowing him to attend classes at Walla Walla Community College.

In imposing the sentence, Superior Court Judge John Lohrmann said, "It was a very serious offense," and declined to allow Tiedemann partial confinement until the school's winter quarter begins in January.

Tiedemann was given credit for the 58 days he'd already served for the assault; ordered to pay $1,637 in costs and fees, plus full restitution for the victim's injuries in an amount to be determined; and placed on a year of community custody, a form of probation, when he's released from jail.

Before the sentence was imposed, Tiedemann told Lohrmann he was sorry for the injuries he caused and the resulting embarrassment to his family. His attorney, Gail Siemers, added that Tiedemann had been drinking when the assault occurred, was immediately very remorseful and "wanted to plead (guilty) from the moment he was in jail."

Officials said he used a broken beer bottle to stab Robert Lawson, 19, about 5:30 a.m. June 17 outside Lawson's residence in the 100 block of North Wilbur Avenue.

Lawson reportedly suffered two severe wounds -- including a severed artery -- to his left thigh and calf. He was treated at Providence St. Mary Medical Center, then released.

After Tiedemann was arrested that afternoon, he told officials he and Lawson "have problems," according to a police report filed in court.
