Feb. 6, 1914 - Aug. 23, 2010
Nelda Arlene Beck-Phares, 96, went home to her heavenly father Monday, Aug. 23, 2010, at The Chaplaincy Hospice in Kennewick. She was born on Feb. 6, 1914, in Davenport, Iowa.
Nelda married Richard (Dick) Phares of Davenport in 1938. They enjoyed 56 years together until his death in 1994.
Nelda and Dick moved to Walla Walla in 1948. Nelda worked as a secretary, first at the Army Corps of Engineers and then at the Social Security office. She retired in 1956 to become a full-time mother.
Nelda had a love for God and zest for life. She enjoyed bowling, golf, swimnastics, lunching with friends and spending time with her family. She was known for her generosity. She would probably say the highlight of her life was golfing in Hawaii, where she had her picture taken with Arnold Palmer.
Nelda is survived by her three children, Bonnie Wickizer and husband Charles Wickizer of Tigard, Ore., Vicki Marks of Kennewick, and Candace Jones and husband Glenn of Kennewick; six grandchildren, Richard Wickizer, Jay Wickizer, Jeremy Jones, Jamye Jones, Joshua Donley and Sara Arendell; nine great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; and those considered family members, Rhonda Bell and her son Kyle, and grandson, Riley.
A memorial service for Nelda will be held at Wheatland Village Chapel, 1500 Catherine St. Walla Walla, at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010. Memorial contributions may be made to Blue Mountain Humane Society or Tri Cities Chaplaincy Hospice House through the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder St., Walla Walla, WA 99362.
