With September quickly approaching it's once again time to ride into the sunset of summer and step into the Walla Walla County Fair and Frontier Days.

With big musical acts, new and exciting vendors and a 147-year-old legacy, this year's fair has already attracted folks hailing from Texas to California.

"Turnout is looking awesome; right now ticket sales are up across the board," said Fair Manager Cory Hewitt, who reckons that big acts like Gary Allan have helped rope in the crowds.

While the fair is an old tradition, organizers have worked hard to keep the event fresh. This year, organizers purchased a 20-by-15 foot (mini) jumbo-tron to provide instant replays and make every seat feel like it's in the front row, Hewitt said.

Fair organizers have also worked hard to bring new and exciting vendors to the event. Aloha Sushi, an interactive U.S. military exhibit with video games, R&D Models -- which sells a variety of handcrafted wooden models -- and the Wild on Western apparel shop are just a few of the new vendors and attractions this year.

For country western fans, the highlight of the event will no doubt be the Wednesday night concert, which kicks off at 7 p.m. The up-and-coming female country western duet, BombsHel, will be opening for renowned Allan. Allan has released eight albums, several of which have made gold or platinum, and has had 24 singles make the Billboard Hot Country Song list. Tickets for the concert are $25 for general admission (grandstands) and $40 for arena seating and are available at the fairground main office or at the gate. Organizers say that tickets will not last long.

On Thursday, car fans can relish the mayhem of the demolition derby night, an old favorite, and as always, the fair saves the best for last with three nights of rodeo and horse racing beginning on Friday.

From Thursday on, fair fun and rodeo entertainment will be followed by music from some of Walla Walla's favorite local bands. Copious Notes will perform on Thursday and Friday, Froghollow Band will perform on Saturday, and Lark Drive will perform on Sunday at 9 p.m.

Also, if you're a fan of horse racing, this could be your last chance to see it at the fair -- hard economic times have forced fair organizers to consider dropping it from next year's lineup, Hewitt said.

There will also be plenty for kids to do all week, with the Kids Farm Center open all week, and the Kids Tractor Pull every afternoon. Friday will be kids day, when all children ages 6-13 can gain admission for just $2. Hewitt also said that young people can expect to see some new rides this year.
