WALLA WALLA -- A Walla Walla woman was sentenced this morning in Superior Court on charges of vehicular assault and driving under the influence stemming from a one-vehicle, injury crash in April on Sandpit Road.

Briseida M. Garcia, 18, of 712 Edith Ave. -- whose case is being handled in the court's Juvenile Department -- received a 10-day sentence for each of the two charges to which she pleaded guilty Aug. 13. But Judge Donald W. Schacht went along with a prosecution recommendation that she not have to serve the 20 days if she successfully completes a total of six months of community supervision, a form of probation.

The defense asked that the case be dismissed after a period of community supervision. But Schacht denied the motion, citing the multiple, serious injuries resulting from the wreck.

When Garcia pleaded guilty, she admitted driving recklessly while under the influence when the crash occurred about 1:30 a.m. April 11.

Two passengers, Nina Pimentel and Araceli Negrete, reportedly suffered various injuries. They told officials that "Garcia was going very fast, probably over 70, when she came to the 's' curve at the 1600 block," according to a Sheriff's Office report filed in court.

"She went onto the shoulder and then out into the field, rolling the vehicle several times," the report says.

Garcia's case is being handled in juvenile court because she was 17 at the time of the crash.

She also had been charged with a second count of vehicular assault, in addition to one count of third-degree theft for allegedly stealing $39 in merchandise from Macy's in Walla Walla in June. But those charges were dismissed in exchange for her guilty pleas.
