Louis E. Riley

Touchet resident, Louis E. Riley Sr., 73, died August 27. 2010, at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, Spokane Washington, following a stroke on August 25th at his home.

Louis was born in Walla Walla to Ralph and Mae Neumeier Riley. He attended Walla Walla schools, graduating from Wa-Hi in 1955. He attended Washington State College and returned home to farm with his father. He was introduced to Janice Adams by mutual friends and they were married on August 30, 1959. He then attended Walla Walla College, in addition to farming.

The couple moved to Touchet on 1960, where they raised their family, farmed, and raised livestock. He was formerly a member of the Touchet-Gardena Lions Club and Touchet Scoutmaster. From his early boyhood, he worked with his father to establish water rights on the Dry Creek home place where he grew up and became very knowledgeable in water rights and water issues. He suffered through many medical issues in his life and conquered them all. He will be remembered for his work ethic and how he shared his thoughts on the correct way to work the land. He didn't want to cause problems for those suffering with asthma and other breathing disorders. He farmed all his life and remained active until this final medical problem.

Louis is survived by his wife of 51 years, Janice, at their home; children Louis Riley, Jr. (Gretchen), Jean Ann Herbert (Steve Martindale), Robert Riley (JoEllen), Meri Klasen (Dean), and Carol Hopkins (Chris); and 14 grandchildren, Jacob, Joel, Amber, Bethie, Mackenzie, Sarah, Tyler, Hannah, Kylam Maxxwell, Joshua, Nickolas, Jonathan, and Nathan; and by siblings, Dorothy Smith (Don), Alice Davis (Rex), Lola Yale (Bob), Elwin Riley (Judy), Beverly Haven (Chet), and Sharon Bogen (Duane) and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law, Larry Herbert.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, September 2nd, 2010, at Pioneer United Methodist Church, with Pastor Joel Ley officiating, 209 E. Birch, Walla Walla. Viewing and visitation will be 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 1st, at Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder, Walla Walla.
