A little pocket change could make a big difference for local charities, especially with matching funds from Community Bank.
The Joseph-based bank continues its "Change for Charity Drive" at its branches through Dec. 20.
The program is designed to collect coins and/or bills that will be used in the same community where they're donated. The bank will match 50 cents on every dollar up to $5,000, according to an announcement.
The money from each branch will be donated to a charity of that branch manager's choice.
As an added twist this year: the bank's branches have been divided into two regions that will compete to raise the most money for their charities. Community Bank will donate an extra $1,000 to the charities in the region where the most donations are collected.
The local Walla Walla and Milton-Freewater branches are part of the Western Region, which also includes branches in Hermiston, Heppner, Pendleton and Clarkston. The Easter Region encompasses branches in La Grande, Baker City, Union, Elgin, Wallowa, Enterprise and Joseph. The winning region will be determined when the funds are counted after Dec. 20.
The Walla Walla branch, 28 E. Alder St., is collecting funds for United Way of Walla Walla. The Milton-Freewater branch, 13 N.E. Fifth Ave., is collecting for the City Light and Power Assistance Program.
Wine is typically the rock star of Holiday Barrel Tasting weekend. But Three Rivers Winery will be the stage for an actual rocker at this weekend's event.
Geoff Tate, Queensr?oslash;che frontman and winemaker, will be the featured guest of a winemaker dinner Saturday night. Chef Andrae Bopp of Andrae's Kitchen will prepare a four-course meal paired with the Three Rivers wines crafted by winemaker Holly Turner. Those include a red and white Insania blend created by Turner and Tate. Tickets for the 6:30 p.m. Insania dinner are $215 per person.
Afterward, Tate and a few unnamed "friends" will perform a semi-acoustic show.
Tate and friends will also perform throughout the barrel tasting weekend next to the fireplace in Three Rivers' tasting room, 5641 Old Highway 12.
The performances will take place at noon and 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Holiday music rock and roll style will be performed, and maybe a few Queensr?oslash;che tunes will be thrown in the mix.
