LETTERS TO THE EDITOR - Support for Operation Christmas Child appreciated

During the week of Nov. 15-22, Janet and I were privileged to witness the generosity of the Walla Walla, Milton-Freewater and Athena citizenry. That week was the National Collection Week for Operation Christmas Child. Individuals, groups, schools and churches are invited to pack a shoe box of gifts including hygiene items, school supplies, small toys, clothing and some candy.

These gifts are sent to children who are living in very difficult environments including war zones, orphanages, hospitals, garbage dumps and streets of their cities. This year in particular 250,000 boxes have been targeted by Operation Christmas Child for delivery in Haiti. The international collection goal for 2010 is 8.5 million shoe box gifts.

Locally, we received 2,018 shoe boxes in the Relay Center located at Northwest Collision. Monetarily, these gifts translate to approximately $40,000 in contributions. The 2010 collection was a 33 percent increase over the 2009 collection! In an economy that has been difficult for many families and individuals, we are so grateful for the compassion and generosity of our region.

May God bless each of you during this continuing holiday season.
