MISSION, Ore. - The Nixyaawii boys basketball team lost its season-opener, 68-66, in overtime to the Pendleton freshmen team at its own tournament Friday night.

"They have a lot of height which gives us problems, especially in rebounding," said head coach Aaron Noisey. "That's one thing we can't teach, is for our kids to be taller."

Pendleton's Joe Boozer led with 25 points. The Golden Eagles' Josh Barkley scored 15 on the night and led the team in rebounds.

The Golden Eagles fell behind by 10 points in the fourth

quarter and the defense

pulled them back into it, Noisey said.

"I'm really happy with the way the kids play at times, but we've only got two seniors and I'm starting two other kids with only one year of basketball experience, and a sophomore and a freshman, so we're inexperienced and it shows at times," he said.

But Noisey and the coaching staff are happy with the overtime loss.

"The coaching staff sees a lot of good things," Noisey said. "We've got a lot to build on and we're proud of them."

The Golden Eagles played in the tournament's consolation game Saturday.
