DAYTON - Pomeroy's girls basketball team opened its season with a win over Dayton Friday night.

The Pirates handed the Bulldogs a 57-28 loss.

Karlie Martin led the Pirates with 17 points. Nicole Lambert scored 12 for the Bulldogs.

Sam Smith and Torrie Koller made one 3-pointer apiece for the Pirates, while the Bulldogs hit none.

"It was a great start for us in the first game of the season," said Pomeroy coach Nettie Severs.

Severs said the balanced team scoring pleased her the most in the victory.

"Everyone contributed," she said. "It was a well-rounded game and the girls played really well together as a team. Karlie (Martin) played exceptional all the way around. She had pretty huge minutes and it was great. It was a really good start for us."

The Pirates worked on forcing turnovers, she said.

"Sometimes it paid off for us, but it burned us a couple times, too," Severs said. "But overall I'm pleased. The girls played really well. They all contributed."

The non-league win was the Pirates' first game. Another non-league match with Asotin was rescheduled to Wednesday.

Dayton is 0-1 on the season and the Bulldogs play again at Riverview Tuesday.
