PASCO - Wa-Hi opened the girls basketball season on the right foot with a 40-24 non-conference win here Friday over Pasco.

The Blue Devils got off to a 7-2 lead after one quarter and expanded the lead to 20-9 at intermission.

"It was a typical first half of the first game," Wa-Hi coach Jill Meliah said. "We came out a little up tight, but our defense was strong and holding them to two points helped us out a lot. We got our press-breaker going in the second quarter, found our bigs, and got up 10 pretty quick."

The Blue Devils used an inside-out attack to continue to build the lead over the second 16 minutes.

Wa-Hi was led by Libbie Jimenez with 13 points from the wing and 10 points from 6-foot-2 Torri Crawford, and seven each from Gabby Anderson and Allie Greene.

"In the second half, we got it to our bigs," Meliah said. "They either made shots or passed it out for open shots (on the perimeter)."

Crawford with eight boards and Greene with eight led the Blue Devils to a 35-14 rebounding edge.

"It's always good to get a win on the road," Meliah said. "It was a real physical game. I was really proud of the way the girls battled and that we started making shots (15-of-31 from the field)."

Wa-Hi (1-0) hosted Kennewick Saturday.
