PREP BASKETBALL — Wa-Hi girls pick up Saturday win over Kennewick

The Blue Devils win 50-29.

WALLA WALLA - Jami Klicker drained a trey, then hit a deuce to cap a 13-6 Wa-Hi run to open the second quarter Saturday in girls non-conference basketball action.

The Blue Devils led 11-9 after one, and following Klicker's pull up jumper, increased the lead to 24-15 with 1:24 left in the first half. Wa-Hi never looked back as the Blue Devils went on to down Kennewick 50-29.

"We improved from the first quarter to fourth quarter last night (a win over Pasco)," Wa-Hi coach Jill Meliah said. "I asked them to take off tonight from where they left off last night. We were able to do that."

Klicker hit a long 2-point shot at the buzzer to end the first period and give the Blue Devils the lead for good at 11-9 after one.

The Blue Devils went inside to their three posts, 6-foot-2 Gabby Anderson, 6-2 Torri Crawford and 5-11 Sydney Christensen, for six points in the second quarter and went to intermission in control at 26-15.

"We're about working hard and playing defense and that will fuel our offense," Meliah said. "Tonight that was the case, and having three solid posts, we have to take advantage of that. Our girls did a good job of looking for our posts first."

The Blue Devils went 2:15 into the third period before Anderson scored on a 3-point play for a 29-17 Blue Devil lead.

"We challenged them at half time to put this game away," Meliah said. "Then we came out really flat in the first two minutes. I called a time out and reminded them (of the challenge). After that, they really came on strong and were able to put the game away."

Anderson finished the quarter with six points and grabbed four offensive and four defensive rebounds in the quarter and a team-high 11 boards for the Blue Devils. Libbie Jimenez drained a trey to end the quarter's scoring and send Wa-Hi to the fourth with a 39-21 lead.

Jimenez finished a fast break with a spinning lay in as Wa-Hi ran its lead to 50-25 with 3:10 left and finished with the 50-29 win.

Kennewick's Angelique Whistocken was the Lions' offense as she finished with a double-double with game-high 17 points and 12 rebounds.

The Blue Devils produced an inside-out balanced scoring attack in improving to 2-0 in the non-conference season. Anderson led the way with 13 points, and fellow posts Christensen and Crawford chipped in with five and six, respectively. Guard Klicker and wing Allie Greene each added nine, and Jimenez finished with eight.

"Our posts are really coming along," Meliah said. "They're still learning, so it's nice to see them have the success they had tonight. (And) I'm really happy to see the balanced scoring. We'll be able to win some games if we continue to see balance in our scoring."

The Blue Devils travel to Hanford to take on the Falcons in a non-conference battle Friday.
