COLLEGE BASKETBALL — WWCC women outscore Linn-Benton in OT for win

WALLA WALLA - WWCC women's outscored Linn-Benton 6-3 in overtime for a 62-59 win in the Warrior Classic Tournament Saturday night.

The Warriors shot 4-of-6 from the line in OT and forward Stevie Humphries scored the only field goal with a bucket inside.

With their two best players fouled out two minutes into overtime, the Roadrunners came up with only three points.

LBCC post Heidi Halemeier and outside shooter Sam Sanders took the bench with five fouls each.

Halemeier had 18 points and six rebounds.

Sanders had 14 points, including shooting 4-of-6 from 3-point land.

"Give credit to Linn-Benton for almost beating us," WWCC coach Bobbi Hazeltine said. "Even when they had trouble with all the fouls. We didn't have much of an answer on defense for Halemeier or Sanders."

Shiann Dreadfulwater had 20 points with eight rebounds and four steals.

"Shiann saved us," Hazeltine said. "She did well on the boards, steals, and goes to the hole well. Shiann also hit free-throws when no one else would."

The Warriors made 13-of-29 free throws and were only 3-of-16 in 3's.

"We missed over ten free throws," Hazeltine said. "And shot terribly from three point. We won. So we must have done something right. I just can't think of it right now.

"There is flat and then there is how we came out. Good teams don't do that. We aren't a good team right now. Hopefully we will fix that before January when the games count."

The Warriors improved to 5-0 in preseason play.

Forward Stevie Humphries finished the game well for WWCC.

She had 11 points and four rebounds.

"Stevie did a really good job," Hazeltine said. "She had some big baskets for us. Humphries also played the best defense on their post out of all four of our posts."

On defense, WWCC used the half-court trap in the second half to much success.

"The trap that we used fueled us and got us on a run to tie it in the second half. We got a lot of steals off it," Hazeltine said. "Shiann and Sienna Edmundson really keyed in making the trap work."

The Lady Warriors had 12 steals.

WWCC's bench outscored Roadrunners bench 27-1.

The Warriors were outrebounded LBCC by a slim margin, 34-to-29.

Starter Caitlin Duncan added eight points, five rebounds and two steals for the Warriors.

"We did play really hard," Hazeltine said. "We always play really hard and we did win.

"We can still learn from the game and get better."

The Warriors' 19 turnovers hurt, with just nine assists.

LBCC had 25 turnovers and 12 assists.

A rematch between the two teams is scheduled for 6 p.m. Dec. 11 at Linn-Benton.
