KAHLOTUS -- People who wish to take part in a tour of Lower Monumental Dam's navigation lock next week need to sign up by Wednesday.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is hosting a "Winter Maintenance Tour" of the structure on Dec. 14. The tour will take place from 10 a.m. to noon.
Anyone interested in attending should call 509-527-7700 by 4 p.m. on Wednesday to register and receive detailed driving directions to the dam.
The tour will give visitors a chance to see the inside of the lock before workers begin removing the lower downstream gate to replace it with a new gate. Workers are also removing a section of damaged concrete in the lock wall and replacing it with new material.
Visitors 18 years and older will need photo identification to enter the dam site. People will not be allowed to bring in purses, bags, backpacks, cell phones, briefcases and similar items into secure areas of the dam. Those items cannot be checked in with the security guards and should be left in vehicles.
Cameras, but not camera bags, will be allowed inside the dam gate to take photographs of work being done inside the navigation lock.
People are asked to be sure to wear clothing appropriate for a construction work site and sturdy, closed-toe shoes. Because weather conditions are frequently colder at the river, visitors should plan to bring appropriate coats, hats and gloves.
